Most of us are introduced into the world of gardening when we see your mothers or fathers pottering in the garden. They always seemed to be working with lots of tools as they worked away in the garden. You probably has a go yourself trying to be a skilled gardener yourself. Now that you too have grown up you too will need those garden tools. Visiting to your local garden centre reveals many different gardening tools available. The price range can be vast for essentially the same pieve of equipment. The tricky part is buying a good quality tool that's needed but not one that is overpriced or has more features that you will ever use. The first essential tool that you'll need when gardening is a fork. This gardening tool looks like a pitchfork with a shorter handle and the tines are wider and there are typically 3 or 4 of them. The fork is used to dig hard soil and break it up for planting, seeding, etc. After you've dug your garden, you will need a hoe to prepare the soil for whatever is to be done with it. This gardening tool is wonderful to work the soils surface. Well cultivated earth allows nutrients and water to seep into the ground and feed and water the plants that you then put in the soil. A round ended shovel is another popular too for larger digging projects but it's not a favourite of mine. I prefer a fork or spade. However, a round headed shovel is probably best for planting trees and shrubs in the garden. Water is a gardeners best friend. Even in the wetter parts of the country, you'll need a watering can. Get one with a long nong nozzle. A longer nozzle on the watering can reduces the rate of water coming coming out and is more gentle on your plants. Also, a watering can with a longer nozzle let you water your plants farther away from you. A detachable head is useful with young seedlings in your garden. The best way to level your garden prior to planting is to use a rake. This rake has a metal frame that is sometimes bow shaped. The tines are short and are attached to one side of the rake. With a good bow rake the removal of large lumps of earth or stones can be done. Turning onto the flat side of the rake makes for easy levelling of the soil prior to planting. Garden shears will be needed to remove unwanted stems and branches from bushes and shrubs. You'll want a good set of shears but they don't need to be expensive. This handy gardening tool makes pruning and shaping your trees and shrubs easy and more controllable. Make sure, when buying, a set of shears that they fit your hand well. If not, long periods of use will become a chore and will make your joints and muscles ache. The gardening tools mentioned above are the basic ones you'll need the most. As your interest in gardening expands so will the range of tools you acquire. You'll gain more knowledge as time goes on about the different gardening tools are available and what is best suited for you and your garden. |
