Home gardening means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Home gardening can combine a large number of different gardening styles and techniques, ranging from simple indoor gardening with a few plants, to hydroponics, to anything else that you can think of that involves gardens and homes.
For a lot of people however, home gardening means the ability to grow your own fresh fruits and vegetables. Although Im really a plant lover, the ability to control what pesticides enter your fresh fruit and vegetables or the ability to provide your family with 100% organic produce provides an unparalleled satisfaction.
Peas out of the pod or a fresh tomato picked straight off the vine are tastier than any you will find in the shops or supermarkets. The fragrance you get from a handful of newly plucked berries, or freshly cut herbs just cant be beaten. This is what the home gardening is all about.
Shouldnt there be more to home gardening than just the growing of vegetables and fruits though? Those were my thoughts at one time when I came upon the concept of home gardening. There is a lot more to home gardening than initially strikes you.
Fruits and vegetables aside, you have your flowering plants, your leafy plants, and even trees which provide the shaded areas of the garden that some plants love. All of these need to be thought out, placed within the design of your garden in a manner that ensures you will reap the maximum rewards. Next, if you want to how about designing an irrigation system worthy of a bigger garden. Or perhaps you want to just water the garden when it requires it using a hose or watering can.
Bugs are an ever growing problem, especially in a fruit or vegetable garden and need to be watched for vigilantly. The vegetables also can come under attack from the cutest of creatures, but dreaded by the gardener, the rabbit! Other rodents can pass on disease and ruin your crops so these need to be dealt with quickly as well.
The soil needs to be aerated to keep it fresh, also allowing for good root growth. Worms and other like insects need to be welcomed into the overall scheme of your home gardening project, although some are more welcome than others!
Soil erosion, drainage, landscaping, tools, equipment, pests are all what go together to create home gardening and the home gardener. The list is almost endless and I could list loads more things that go to encompass the home garden.
However, at the end of the day, it needs to be a place that you feel welcome and comfortable in, and that your visitors can feel enjoy as well as you. A place that invites you to explore all the nooks and crannies, produces great fresh crops of food as well. This is what home gardening is all about. |
